I tend to agree with Gawker on this one: a lot of these songs are inappropriate for funerals (Tina Turner, “The Best”? Really?). That said, ”Always Look On The Bright Side Of Life” is classic English cheekiness.
True story: a few years ago, I attended a funeral for the father of one of my mother’s close friends. He was a Chinese man who (as I recall) lived in the Bay Area his whole life, and over the years my parents had mentioned his extraordinary kindness many times. In fact, he was the one who had arranged the Chinese food buffet at their wedding reception.
The whole ceremony was dedicated to reminding attendees that he’d made the most of life, and that he’d told all his close family in his final days that he loved them and wanted them to be as happy as they possibly could be. And at the conclusion, his daughter stood at the lectern, invited everyone to join the family for a reception, and announced that her father had requested this specific song to be played as we walked out: "Happy Trails".
